With the majority of the world’s humanity now living in cities, the urban population is set to rise sharply in coming decades, estimates the World Health Organization. The WHO predicts that 60 percent of humanity will live in cities by 2030, with the figure increasing to 70 percent by 2050. One hundred years ago, the WHO says, only twenty percent of people lived in cities; by 1990, the urban population had risen to 40 percent.
