High-density, walkable neighborhoods. Sustainable communities that produce their own electricity. Welcome to  . . . AFRICA. That’s right, Africa — the newest frontier in urban innovation and cutting-edge design.

There are at least ten projects under development in Africa that will showcase these and other New Urbanist principles, according to TheSouthAfrican.com. Among them is Konza Technology City north of Nairobi, Kenya, a project backed by Google, and Eko Atlantic, a district planned for Lagos, the continent’s largest city.

The article explains that these developments provide Africa with a clean slate for city planning and the opportunity to build communities that are more livable and energy-efficient than many Western cities.
