Rockefeller Foundation to DeBlasio: Strengthen Resilience; Launch BRT

The Rockefeller Foundation has an important message for incoming New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio: build on outgoing Mayor Bloomberg’s efforts to address climate change.

In a Nov. 19 speech, Rockefeller Foundation President Judith Rodin detailed five key recommendations. Here are two highlights:

  • Create the new position of Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and Resilience to oversee efforts to prep for climate change and ensure that financial institutions and other businesses can quickly bounce back from weather-related disruptions.
  • Introduce Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) — buses that operate on dedicated lanes — in every borough. The concept was pioneered by Curitiba, Brazil and has been adopted by several other cities in South America.
