Dubai as a smart city?

Dubai is lavish, daring and full of bravado. In other words, it’s the antithesis of what a smart city aims to be. But lately, the message coming from the UAE is that this bastion of architectural excess aspires to be the next smart metropolis.

The newly announced Silicon Park is a step in that direction. The planned $300 million technology park will rely heavily on solar power and feature some visionary amenities, like public charging docks on the streets. The only vehicles permitted inside the park will be electric powered.

Silicon Park could help Dubai test some concepts that it plans to deploy on a wider scale, such as electric vehicle charging stations. From tiny drones that could deliver licenses and government documents to smart meters that monitor water and energy consumption, Dubai is starting to look a lot smarter, in its own flashy way.
