Holyoke (Mass.) Innovation District:  Holyoke, a struggling factory town in western Massachusetts, has sought to turn itself around with an “innovation district” that features an energy efficient, high-performance computing center that serves five major universities in the state.

Greensburg, Kansas: After a tornado ravaged nearly all of this rural community, it reemerged as a model for sustainability. Greensburg rebuilt with an emphasis on energy efficient homes and buildings with the goal on becoming a net-zero energy user.
